EXPLORER POST

The Northfield Ambulance sponsors an explorer’s post. The explorer’s are a group of teens ranging from the age of 14 to the age of 18 working together to help their community. The Explorer’s are taught CPR first aid and many other lifesaving skills. The explorers give teens a way to explore the medical field in many different ways. First we start off with the ambulance itself.

The ambulance is divided into many organized cabinets. Each cabinet contains various tools needed for different scenarios. One cabinet the explorer will often use is the cabinet containing the Oxygen bag, Trauma Bag and IV Kit. While the explorer is unable to insert the Iv he or she is able to gather materials needed for the EMT and ready vital pieces of equipment. The inside isn’t the only place to find equipment. An explorer is often sent to get a backboard or other pieces of equipment needed. The explorer would know that the backboard is located in the first outside cabinet behind the driver side door. An explorer is taught to backboard, asses a patient and to stay calm and not panic in any situation.

Now don’t go thinking that and explorer is expected to know all or any of this. When an explorer joins The first things they need to do is begin to know where things are located on the ambulance and begin to learn how to take vitals. Vitals are Blood pressure, pulse and Respiration’s. These skills are taught at Biweekly meetings. Once the advisor feels that the explorer has advanced in these skills the explorer will then become certified in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR. After the explorer is certified in CPR the are able to "run" on the ambulance. This is where all the fun begins.

Just because the explorer is "on call" doesn’t mean they can go jump into the rig (ambulance) and begin to stick people with IV’s or defibrillate the patient. An explorer is limited in what he or she can do in the back of the ambulance. The EMT will tell the explorer what to do and when to do it. The Emt will know what the explorer’s skill level is and what the explorer will be able to do. In conclusion Explorer’s is beneficial to both the Explorer and the community. Explorer’s is a good way for teens to get out and help others, learn new skills and meet new people at the same time.
